Welman F. Pugh's diary entries from October 26, 1862 to April 30, 1863 record daily activities and events on the plantation. He attached himself to various Confederate military units in the Lafourche District between May and July 1863 and he records his assignments in the diary. It includes an account of his death on August 10, 1863, as well as orders, regulations, and muster rolls for the "Light-Foot Chargers," a make-believe company of soldiers of which a younger 12-year-old brother was captain. Eight items removed from the diary consist of a letter to William W. Pugh regarding delivery of cistern sugar (1844); two school compositions, one by Charles H. Pugh (1864); Welman Pugh's school report; draft of a note regarding a personal experience; and three newspaper clippings of poems.
